Indicting Sharpe

It was just a few hours ago that a federal grand jury voted to indict former Newark Mayor Sharpe James on 33 counts related to city land deals and travel expenses.

But the Jersey blogs have been talking about the possibility for days.

Can the 71-year-old ex-mayor beat the charges? Did U.S. Prosecutor Chris Christie go after James for political reasons? And who are the female companions James allegedly used city money to entertain and take on overseas trips?

The ex-mayor didn't have much to say this morning, according to video posted on TVJersey.

UPDATE 7/13/07: The blogs are full of Sharpe commentary today. And it's been interesting to read some of the old commentary about Sharpe, including posts written weeks ago. Michael Shapiro of ShapTalk points to his month-old post, The Demise of Sharpe James?.
